Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is becoming an ever increasing problem as a foodborne gastrointestinal disease. With increased awareness, the diagnosis of non-O157 STEC infections will likely  continue to rise worldwide. There are several interrelated critical research needs that  have implications for the understanding the significance of these infections.
